Acid Reflux MedicationIn general the doctors do not prefer prescribing medication for acid disease in the initial stages mainly considering the side effects related to most of the acid reflux medication. In majority of cases doctors suggest other forms of acid reflux treatment rather than prescribing medication directly. It is very rate that doctors would suggest acid reflux surgery unless there is no better option of treatment. But in case of
severe acid reflux problem such
as for patient whose esophagus has signs of damages doctors to
prescribe the
acid reflux
medication. In majority of cases when a person is diagnosed with acid reflux the doctors suggest few ways to relieve him or her from the acid reflux symptoms. As acid reflux is the back up of acid via stomach to the throat and mouth hence controlling it is the best solution. The first and
foremost thing which
is normally done is controlling the acid by some basic changes in the
lifestyle
which includes restricting all those food which triggers to such
symptoms. To
take small quantity of food for every meal, avoiding coffee, smoking,
alcohol and
keeping the weight check. The most common
medication for acid reflux
disease is antacids.
But the doctors recommend this only when necessary for
example if the acid reflux symptoms still persists for a patient even
after
following the recommended changes in the lifestyle as per the doctor’s
suggestion. In majority of cases the medication such as antacids are prescribed before the tests such as endoscopy and esophageal monometry are done by the doctor to confirm if the patient is actually suffering from acid reflux disease. The main purpose behind the medication such as antacid is to check if it is working well i.e. if the medication is working well for the patient then in that case no need to conduct too many tests considering the fact that required tests are bit costly. The
above mentioned tests are
basically conducted to find out about the root cause and gravity of the
patient’s acid reflux disease condition. For example conducting tests
such as
upper GL series can help to rule out the probable diagnoses like peptic
ulcer.
Tests such as endoscopy on the other hand can help to determine the
abnormalities in patient’s esophagus lining. But one should remember to take the acid reflux medication following the guidelines provided by the doctor to prevent the acid back up from again occurring. The acid
reflux medication includes
H2
blockers such as pepcid or zantac or proton pump
inhibitors such as prevacid. |
